It's hard to say good-bye. This beautiful animal came into our lives 14 years ago when she was about four years old. We thought a companion would be good for Mira, the dog on our opening page, and found this dog at the Humane Society near Milford. She was a "special needs" dog because she was deaf. The people at the shelter named her Snowflake because her world was quiet like falling snow. We, in our infinite wisdom, renamed her Keller (as in Helen Keller) but Snowflake really suited her. She was as serene as a Christmas Eve snowfall. She never barked unless she needed something badly but was always willing to go for a walk or a run or play "sock" with my husband, Doug. "Sock" involved her pulling off his shoes and then removing his socks so that she could chew on his toes.. We did communicate with her thru sign. She developed diabetes about 1 1/2 years ago and that, along with the changes that come with advancing age, wore her out. She lost weight. Cataracts stole her sight. She became weak and fearful of moving around the house she had lived in for all those years. She couldn't run wildly around the yard just to blow off excess energy. She coped very well in her silent world but when her world became dark also and she could barely walk, we helped her go home. She was always our angel; now she's God's angel. Now she can hear, perhaps for the first time, and see again and run again ... but the silence is so much louder without her. Good-bye, little bit.
